Apple Seeds for Literacy Foundation This is a program designed to bring the newspaper to the classroom for the benefit of the children of San Antonio. Plunkett & Gibson's Ronnie Hornberger explains what the program means to him. When I was in junior school and high school, I remember having the Houston newspapers available in Civics and American and Texas history classes and how important they were as teaching tools and discussion generators. With this program, I am able to help others have the same enrichment to their educations. Agreeing or not agreeing with what you hear or read is not the important thing. Being able to discuss it and learn from it is. Visit www.MySA.com, keyword: ENIE for feedback about how our educators are using newspapers with their students. Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Texas' mission is to help children reach their potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships. The Plunkett & Gibson family supports this wonderful organization through the efforts and participation of a number of its members. Read what Laura Cavaretta has to say about her experiences as a "Big Sister!" I have been participating in the school-based mentoring program with Big Brothers, Big Sisters for more than 3 years. When I first met my "Little" she was in second grade, was falling behind in school, and was expected to repeat second grade. Her teacher "assigned" me to help her with her reading and writing. I am proud to say that she not only passed second grade, but is now a fifth grade honor student who wants to go to college. I know that I have had an impact on her life, but I suspect that I may get more out of this relationship than she does! I look forward to our weekly visits and treasure the relationship we have developed. We are now working on getting her to eat more vegetables. I suspect the reading project will prove to have been the easiest one yet. Child Guidance Center of San Antonio This is a program designed to provide quality outpatient mental health services to children and families on a sliding fee scale based upon family income. Plunkett & Gibson's John Heller explains what he thinks this program should mean to all of us. An estimated one fifth of all young people with mental disorders are not receiving any treatment. Last year, the Child Guidance Center provided services to over 2,000 children and teenagers throughout Bexar County. If you agree the children are our future, then every one is precious to tomorrow. The Center is improving the community, one child at a time. At the Witte one can see fossils in the Dinosaur Gallery and view the Triceratops and the Tyrannosaurus Rex. The Ancient Texans Exhibit tells the story of the people who lived in West Texas along the Pecos River thousands of years ago. Then there are the many science exhibits, including exhibits exploring the environment of the San Antonio River. Also found on the grounds of the Witte are several log cabins and historic homes. This jewel of San Antonio is a vibrant, growing and ever changing window into the history, the geology, and the archaeology of San Antonio and South Texas. Plunkett & Gibson is proud to have had one of its members serve as Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
